What is the fall pattern for brook and lake trout?
Two overlapping programs: spawn and feast. As water falls through 10 °C (50 °F) — October at 45°N, September farther north — brook trout in full crimson-and-orange spawning color move to gravelly spring-fed shallows and tributary riffles, while lake trout gather over rocky shoals and reef tops in 2–10 m (6–33 ft) to broadcast eggs at night. Around the spawners, everything else is eating hard against winter: this is the season of aggressive takes on spoons and streamers in shallow water. Check regulations first — many jurisdictions close brook and lake trout waters in late September or October precisely to protect these concentrated, catchable spawners.
