Why is fall the jumbo window?
Three curves cross. Cooling water drops back through the 17–23 °C (63–73 °F) metabolic sweet spot, so appetite peaks; shrinking days push a pre-winter feeding urgency; and the year's forage — young-of-year minnows, fattened crayfish, goby-and-mussel lawns — is at maximum abundance. Big perch respond by ganging onto deep hard bottom: shell beds, gravel, and main-basin flats in 6–12 m (20–40 ft), often in tighter and more catchable concentrations than at any other open-water time. At Canadian and Great Lakes latitudes that window runs from after turnover to first ice, and it is the season to hunt a personal-best rather than a bucketful.
