What do yellow perch actually eat?
A lifelong climb up a food ladder. Fry start on zooplankton; by their first fall, young perch are grazing bottom invertebrates — midge and mayfly larvae, bloodworms, scuds, sowbugs — and that grazing remains the caloric backbone for most of the population for life. Past roughly 20 cm (8 in), the menu tilts toward crayfish (soft-shelled especially), darters and sculpins, minnows and shiners, young sunfish — and smaller perch. Know which rung your fish are on and you know what to tie: bug-sized baits for the flats crowd, minnow- and crayfish-profile baits for the big ones.
