How does a crawler harness work, and when should I pull one?
A harness is a two-hook snell threaded through a nightcrawler, behind a spinner blade and beads, pulled slowly on a bottom bouncer or inline weight — a scent trail, a flash-and-thump attractor, and a natural bait in one rig. It is the definitive tool for scattered warm-water walleye: from early summer onward, pull it at 1.6–3.2 km/h (1–2 mph) along contours, flats, and weed edges, letting the bouncer tick bottom with the rod at 45 degrees and roughly a 45-degree line angle. Blade choice follows light and speed — smaller Colorado blades thump slow and dark, willow blades flash faster and brighter. On the take, feed line for a beat before sweeping, or run circle-style harness hooks. Its season ends when water cools and fish regroup — then the jig takes over again.
