When should I downsize my bait?

When something has shrunk the strike zone: a fresh cold front, heavy fishing pressure, bluebird skies, ultra-clear water, or fish visibly following and refusing. A smaller, quieter profile asks less commitment from a fish that is inspecting instead of reacting, and it rides fully inside a half-hearted suction strike that would only nip a big bait. But remember the gape math — a largemouth routinely eats prey a third of its body length — so downsizing is the counterpunch for tough conditions, never the opening move.
