How can perch keep feeding all winter when bass shut down?

Enzyme systems tuned to cool water. A largemouth's digestion nearly stalls near 4 °C (39 °F), so eating buys it little; a perch's cool-water metabolism still runs at a usable rate, so daily grazing keeps paying. The winter difference is quantitative, not on/off: meals are smaller, digestion takes days instead of hours, and feeding compresses into daylight windows — but it happens every day, all winter. That daily appetite under ice is exactly why perch are the marquee hard-water species across Canada, the Great Lakes states, and the northern prairies.
