Do smallmouth strike out of aggression or hunger?
Both circuits exist, and reading which one is active decides your day. Hunger strikes follow forage logic — matching goby, crayfish, or baitfish profiles, fished where the food is. Aggression and reaction strikes ignore that logic: nest-guarding males attack intruders they would never eat, and a deflecting crankbait gets hit by fish that just refused a perfect finesse presentation. Post-front or high-pressure fish are usually in hunger-only inspection mode (finesse wins); active, wind-blown, or territorial fish open the aggression channel (speed and disturbance win).
