Are smallmouth really harder fighters than largemouth, pound for pound?

Pound for pound, yes — and it is physiology, not folklore. Smallmouth are built for sustained pursuit in cool, often flowing water: a more streamlined body, and a cool-water metabolism that keeps output high through a long fight instead of fading after the first surge. Where a largemouth typically makes a short violent run for cover and tires, a smallmouth strings together long runs, repeated full-clearance jumps, and last-second dives under the boat. Many anglers who have caught both consider a 1.5 kg smallmouth the harder fight of the two species at that weight.
