Do pike ever eat insects, leeches and other invertebrates?

Young pike do, briefly; adults do when the lake leaves them no choice. A pike fry starts on zooplankton, moves to insect larvae and turns to fish within its first weeks to months — one of the fastest switches among our gamefish. For a normal adult, invertebrates are a trace. The instructive exception comes from small, fish-poor northern lakes, where pike have been documented living largely on leeches, scuds and big insect larvae because there is nothing else: those populations are thin, slow-growing and stunted. So an invertebrate-eating adult pike is not a feeding pattern to fish — it is a diagnosis of the lake. Fish eggs are not pike food either; it hunts the spawning suckers and ciscoes, not what they leave on the gravel.
