What are "roaming basin schools" and how do I fish them?

In summer and winter, part of the population abandons structure entirely and cruises the open basin, shadowing drifting clouds of plankton and young shad. These schools relate to nothing you can cast at — no brush, no break — and they move continuously, sometimes hundreds of meters in a day. Before modern electronics they were effectively unfishable; today side-imaging and forward-facing sonar find them directly, and the technique is simple once found: hover at range, drop or cast a jig to the school's depth, and move when they move. If your structure spots are empty, the fish are usually out roaming, not gone.
