Live minnow versus plastic — how much does smell really matter?

Crappie are primarily sight-and-vibration feeders, so smell rarely gets a fish to the bait — but taste often decides whether it keeps the bait. A live minnow adds real scent, real micro-vibration, and a texture the fish does not instantly reject, which buys you seconds of extra holding time on the strike. That edge matters most in cold water, when a slowed-down crappie inspects longer before committing; in warm, active periods a well-fished plastic catches essentially even with live bait and fishes faster.
