Practice strategy: Real cases and full tackle pairings

Real case: What happened and what can be learned

Livesay said in a post-tournament interview at Fork in 2021 that during practice he used mapping to find new water, avoiding putting all attention on familiar community holes.

Practice should answer questions you’ll face in the tournament: where the fish are, whether it’s repeatable, under what conditions they bite, and whether you have backups. It’s not about pre-catching a weigh-in bag. Once you find a credible sample, stop pounding the same school; save the opportunity and expand independent evidence.

Complete pairings of rigs, rod, reel, and line

Below are starting configurations given by this site for the chapter’s scenarios; they are not unsupported angler gear lists. Feet are used for depth and rod length, inches for bait length, lb is rated line strength, oz is weight. 1 oz is about 28.35 g, 1 foot about 30.5 cm. M, MH, H denote medium, medium-heavy, and heavy power; fast describes bend location, not a requirement to retrieve fast. A reel marked 7:1 indicates gear ratio per handle turn; actual line pickup also depends on spool size.

Validate two setups: 7-foot M spinning, size 2500 reel, 10 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro leader, 3-inch soft swimbait, 1/4 oz head; 7-foot MH casting, 7:1 reel, 15 lb fluoro, 3/8 oz jig, 3-inch craw. Mapping, trails, and note-taking tools are equally necessary. When you need to confirm species and size, use normal legal tackle; debarbed or hookless only verifies chasing and cannot be taken as a weighed sample based on the size of followers.
