Switching Between Fast and Slow Tempos (Power-finesse rotation): Real Case and Complete Tackle Pairings

Real case: What happened and what to learn

Matt Arey, in his drifting interview at the 2019 St. Clair AOY Championship, described searching with a crankbait or swimbait, then following up with a tube or drop shot.

Read the original report.

Fast/slow rotation should be triggered by evidence: once search baits find fish, get followers, or make clear contact, then slowing down has a specific location to hold on. If you slow down without a target, you can spend the whole day on dead water; but if you keep burning through a concentration of fish you’ve already found, you’ll waste the discovery.

Complete pairings of rigs, rods, reels, and line

Below is this site’s starting setup for the scenarios in this chapter; it is not an angler gear list lacking source support. Feet are used for depth and rod length, inches for bait length, lb is stated line strength, oz is weight. 1 oz ≈ 28.35 g, 1 foot ≈ 30.5 cm. M, MH, H denote medium, medium-heavy, and heavy power; fast action describes the bend location, not a mandate to retrieve quickly. A 7:1 reel denotes gear ratio per handle turn; actual line pick-up also depends on spool.

Search rod: 7-foot M/MH casting, 6.3:1 reel, 12 lb fluoro, mid-diving crankbait; or 7-foot M spinning, 3000 reel, 15 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro, 3.3-inch paddletail on a 1/4 oz head. Follow-up rod: 7-foot M fast-action spinning, 2500 reel, 10 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro, 3.5-inch tube on a 1/4 oz head, plus a 1/4 oz drop shot, size 1 hook, 4-inch straight-tail.

What to throw here

  • Bladed Jig (Chatterbait) — Cover a grass edge to find active fish and record their depth.
  • Drop Shot — Refine a confirmed target by changing speed and dwell time before colour.
