Fishing Baitballs: Adjustment checklist, on-the-water practice, and sources
With and without response: what to do next
Bait present but no isolated targets: expand to the edges and below the baitball—don’t immediately spend time on color changes.
Fish follow but won’t eat: first run the bait straighter, then compare one accelerated escape versus one short pause; note which one closes the distance.
Constantly ticking bottom: you’re below the suspended targets—raise the layer or reduce weight; bottom fish are a different problem, don’t lump the two into “they won’t bite.”
On-the-water practice, logging, and scope of sources
First choose one scenario from this chapter that matches your water, complete one pass using that scenario’s tackle, boat position, target point, and retrieve order, then change one variable. The depths, distances, wait times, and weight ranges above are calibratable starting points, not guarantees fish will be present.
Log the exact target points and boat positions that day, the water layer actually contacted, whether bites occurred on the fall or the retrieve, where fish came unbuttoned, and the results after adjustments. Only casts where the bait truly traveled through the specified layer and didn’t foul in grass count as valid samples. Decide whether to continue based on repeatable responses in your own logs—don’t stick with a spent pattern just because you saw it in a tournament report.
Case facts per the original source; scenario sections are this site’s instructional applications, not claims of first-hand authorship, and performance from different lakes and seasons is not a guarantee of catches.

What to throw here
- Swimbaits (paddle tail, hollow body, line-through, umbrella, lipless/VIB, kicking frog) — Count down to the upper edge of predators feeding beside a bait school.
- Drop Shot — Use a controlled depth when fish hold below bait; a suspended fish is not a bottom target.
