Current Fishing: Adjustment Checklist, On-Water Drills, and Sources

What to do next when you do and don’t get bites

  • Line stays tight and lifts the bait: let the boat slip with the current a bit or shorten your cross-current distance.
  • Weight hops nonstop and masks bites: first slow your relative drag, then try less weight.
  • After entering slack, the line suddenly moves the opposite way: pick up slack to confirm; don’t dismiss it as just current.
  • Exit route blocked or current exceeds boat-control ability: change spots; weight cannot fix boat control.

On-Water Practice, Logging, and Source Boundaries

Pick one scenario from this chapter that matches your water. Execute one full cycle using that scenario’s tackle, boat position, target, and retrieve sequence, then change one variable. Depths, distances, wait times, and weight ranges above are calibratable starting points, not guarantees fish will be there.

Log exact targets and boat positions that day, the actual water layer contacted, whether the bite came on the fall or during the retrieve, where the fish came off, and the results after adjustments. Only casts where the bait truly traveled through the intended layer and wasn’t fouled with grass count as valid samples. Let repeatable responses in your own log decide whether to continue; don’t stick to a now-dead pattern just because you read a tournament report.

Factual case details are in the original source; the scenario section is our instructional application. We do not claim the author’s firsthand experience here, nor do we treat results from different lakes and seasons as a catch guarantee.
