Culling & Fish Care: Adjustment checklist, on-water practice, and references

What to do next when there is or isn’t a reaction

Records don’t match identifiers: stop fishing and verify immediately—do not guess.

Count not verified after a cull: the process isn’t complete.

Penalty questions: confirm with the tournament, not prior-stop precedent.

Basic fish-care operations reference the Ontario fish handling guidance.

On-water practice, logging, and source boundaries

First choose a scenario in this chapter that matches your water, complete one pass using that scenario’s gear, boat position, targets, and retrieve order, then change one variable. The depths, distances, wait times, and weight ranges above are calibratable starting points, not guarantees of fish presence.

Log the exact target and boat position of the day, the actual water column contacted, whether bites came on the fall or retrieve, where fish were lost, and the results after adjustments. Only casts where the bait truly traveled the designated water column and wasn’t fouled by grass count as valid samples. Use repeatable responses in your own log to decide whether to continue—don’t stick with a now-dead pattern just because you saw it in a tournament report.

Case facts are in the original source; the scenario section is our instructional application—we do not claim the author’s firsthand experience, nor do we treat results from different lakes or seasons as a guarantee of catching.

Return to the Tactics index, and plan practice in conjunction with Casting angles and Boat drift control.
