Popper
Concave or cupped-face topwater that spits and pops in place, imitating feeding bream or a struggling baitfish.
Also known as: Popper · pop-r · chugger · spitter · popping bait
The strike you can see. Nothing in bass fishing beats a blow-up on the surface.
- Walking, popping, buzzing, frogging: each has its water and its cadence
- Do not set on the splash — wait for the weight
- Low light, calm water, warm season; frogs own the mats
- Nylon is the one line that belongs here: it floats
A popper sits still between twitches and 'pops' water when you snap the rod tip, thanks to a cupped or concave mouth. Unlike a walking bait it does not need to move forward to have action — it can be worked almost stationary, which makes it the go-to for tight-quarters, sight-fishing situations like docks, laydowns, and grass edges where a fish is holding in a specific spot rather than roaming.
It shines when bass are keying on bream or small baitfish near structure — the pop-pause-pop cadence mimics a bluegill feeding on the surface and draws reaction strikes from bass sitting underneath docks, brush, and grass lines. It's also the better choice than a walking bait in calmer, clearer conditions where a subtler, more stationary presentation out-produces a bait that's constantly moving away from the target.
It fails in wind and chop, where the pop gets lost and the bait blows off target, and in off-color, muddy water where a subtler splash-and-sit presentation doesn't call fish from a distance the way a buzzbait or frog does. It's also a poor open-water search tool compared to a walking bait since its effective radius per cast is small. Gear runs lighter than most other topwater: a medium or medium-heavy fast-action rod, often spinning tackle, with 10-15lb fluorocarbon or mono, since the goal is a subtle presentation and pinpoint accuracy around targets rather than long-distance chugging.
