Hollow-Body Frog

Weedless, hollow-body soft frog designed to be walked or dragged across matted vegetation and heavy cover without fouling.

Also known as: Hollow-Body Frog · frog · toad · hollow body frog · swamp toad · spro frog style

The strike you can see. Nothing in bass fishing beats a blow-up on the surface.

  • Walking, popping, buzzing, frogging: each has its water and its cadence
  • Do not set on the splash — wait for the weight
  • Low light, calm water, warm season; frogs own the mats
  • Nylon is the one line that belongs here: it floats

A hollow-body frog rides hook points up, collapses on the bite, and is soft enough to compress under a bass's mouth for a solid hookup despite having no exposed hook. That weedless design is the entire point of the variant: it is the only mainstream topwater that can be fished directly across matted vegetation, slop, and pad fields that other baits simply cannot cross.

It shines anywhere thick surface cover meets warm water — matted hydrilla or milfoil, lily pad fields, floating grass, and laydowns/standing timber with braid heavy enough to horse fish out. Bright, calm summer days over mats are the classic window, but a walking-style frog worked more open can be worked around laydowns and docks too. Because it's a cover bait first, it consistently produces the biggest fish in a stretch of grass, but not many bites per hour — the definition of a kicker-fish bait.

It fails in open water and clear, sparse cover, where a walking bait or popper out-produces it, and it fails badly on hooksets for beginners: the single most common mistake is setting the hook the instant a fish blows up rather than waiting a half-beat to feel weight, which is critical since the frog must be fully compressed to expose the hooks. It also requires heavy gear — 50-65lb braid and a heavy, fast-action flipping-style rod are standard — because you need to pull fish through matted vegetation immediately after the hookset, not fight them in it.
