Umbrella rig
A multi-arm wire rig carrying several small swimbaits to imitate an entire baitfish school, best known as the Alabama rig.
Also known as: Umbrella rig · A-rig · Alabama rig · castable umbrella rig · multi-swimbait rig
The most realistic thing you can throw — from a 3 in paddle tail to a 10 in trophy hunter.
- Paddle tail on a jighead or weighted swimbait hook covers 80 % of situations
- Hollow body over grass, line-through for big fish, umbrella for schools
- Slow and steady; the tail does the talking
- Rod power to bait weight — a 1 oz bait needs a heavy rod
The umbrella rig, popularized under the brand name Alabama rig after Paul Elias's 2011 win, is a multi-arm wire frame that lets an angler fish 3 to 5 small swimbaits at once, imitating a school of baitfish rather than a single one. It is the most literal baitfish-school imitation in the swimbait family and can produce multiple hookups on a single cast when bass are schooled tight.
It shines whenever bass are grouped and actively feeding on schools of baitfish — fall largemouth blowing up on shad, or winter smallmouth suspended over deep humps and holding tight to bait balls marked on electronics. Matching arm count, bait size, and retrieve depth to the baitfish present is the key skill; too big a rig looks unnatural to smallmouth, and too sparse a rig underwhelms schooling largemouth. It fails around cover, since multiple arms and hooks foul constantly, and it fails on individual, non-schooled fish where a single realistic bait outperforms a multi-bait spread. Many tournament organizations restrict the number of hooks or ban true umbrella rigs, so always confirm local and tournament rules before tying one on.
Gear must handle real casting weight and multiple fish: a heavy to extra-heavy, fast-action rod rated specifically for umbrella rigs, 20-25lb fluorocarbon or braid, and a reel with a strong drag and high line capacity, since a doubled or tripled-up fish puts far more load on tackle than a single swimbait. Most anglers downsize arm count and bait size for smallmouth and heavy-cover-free largemouth water, and go full-size, 5-arm rigs only in open water with abundant baitfish.
