Line-through / glide swimbait
A hard-bodied, often segmented swimbait with the line running through the body via a wire harness, designed to glide side to side on the pause.
Also known as: Line-through / glide swimbait · glide bait · wire-through swimbait · segmented swimbait · hard swimbait
The most realistic thing you can throw — from a 3 in paddle tail to a 10 in trophy hunter.
- Paddle tail on a jighead or weighted swimbait hook covers 80 % of situations
- Hollow body over grass, line-through for big fish, umbrella for schools
- Slow and steady; the tail does the talking
- Rod power to bait weight — a 1 oz bait needs a heavy rod
Line-through swimbaits — commonly called glide baits — are jointed or single-piece hard baits with a wire running through the body that the line attaches to directly, rather than to a hook eye. This construction lets the bait swing widely side to side on a slack-line pause, imitating a big, wounded or cruising baitfish in a way soft plastics can't replicate. They are purpose-built for triggering the biggest, most selective fish in a body of water, usually largemouth over 5 pounds or trophy smallmouth.
They shine in cold, clear water — winter and early pre-spawn — when big bass are lethargic but still willing to eat something slow and easy that glides right in front of their face. A subtle walk-the-dog-style retrieve with long pauses lets the bait hang and swing in the strike zone far longer than a swimming soft plastic would. They also work well in summer and fall on clear lakes for smallmouth cruising rock points. They fail around cover — trebles foul constantly — and they fail when bass want speed and vibration rather than a slow glide, which is common in warm, stained water or aggressive schooling situations better served by a paddle tail or umbrella rig.
Glide baits require dedicated gear: a moderate to heavy, moderate-action glide-bait-specific rod (too fast an action tears hooks from these often light-wire, big-gap trebles), 15-25lb fluorocarbon or a heavy braid-to-fluorocarbon leader, and a reel with a slow to moderate retrieve ratio to control cadence. These baits are expensive and single-purpose, so most anglers carry only two or three sizes and colors rather than a large rotation.
