Hollow belly swimbait
A large, hollow-bodied soft swimbait rigged on an internal or exposed weighted hook, built to imitate a full-size baitfish or trout.
Also known as: Hollow belly swimbait · hollow body swimbait · big swimbait · trout imitator · Huddleston-style swimbait
The most realistic thing you can throw — from a 3 in paddle tail to a 10 in trophy hunter.
- Paddle tail on a jighead or weighted swimbait hook covers 80 % of situations
- Hollow body over grass, line-through for big fish, umbrella for schools
- Slow and steady; the tail does the talking
- Rod power to bait weight — a 1 oz bait needs a heavy rod
Hollow belly swimbaits are big — usually 4.5 to 10 inches — soft plastic baits with a hollow cavity that a weighted swimbait hook slides into, giving a lifelike swimming action with a wide, realistic profile. They are a selective, big-fish tool: most anglers throw them specifically to target the largest bass in a lake, sacrificing bite quantity for bite quality.
They shine in two windows: pre-spawn, when big females are staging shallow and keying on trout or shad-sized meals before locking onto beds, and fall, when they gorge on migrating shad along main-lake points and flats. Sight-fishing a hollow belly to a big female cruising a spawning flat, or burning one through a fall shad blow-up, are the classic uses. They fail in cold, sluggish conditions where bass won't chase a large, fast-moving bait, and they fail around heavy cover since the exposed or lightly guarded hook fouls easily — this is an open-water and sparse-cover bait.
Gear needs to handle the bait's bulk: a heavy, moderate-action rod (moderate action protects against pulling the hook from a big, soft-mouthed strike), 17-20lb fluorocarbon, and a reel with enough torque to move the bait steadily without bogging down. Anglers commonly upgrade the hook or add a stinger for better hookup ratios since the wide-gap single hook and big bait profile can lead to short strikes and misses. Confidence and repetition matter more than variety of retrieve — a slow, steady swim with occasional pauses near cover is the bread-and-butter presentation.
