Sinking Spybait
The classic slow-sinking spybait, fished on a straight slow reel to hang in the water column for suspended, deep or clear-water bass.
Also known as: Sinking Spybait · spybait · spin bait · Duo Realis Spinbait · sinking spin bait · prop minnow · Spybait · spybaits · micro spin bait · prop-tail glider
The slowest sinking lure with the smallest action — for clear water bass that ignore everything else.
- Count it down, then a dead-slow straight retrieve; the props do the work
- PE 0.4-0.6 and a long light fluoro leader: line diameter kills the action
- Suspended, pressured, forward-facing-sonar fish
- Patience is the technique
This is the original and most common spybait style: a slim minnow-shaped body with a small weighted internal ballast and two tiny counter-rotating propellers, engineered to sink very slowly on a slack line and hold depth on a dead-slow retrieve. It has no built-in wobble to speak of — the props supply the flash and subtle vibration while the body tracks essentially straight. Anglers count it down to the target depth, then reel just fast enough to keep the props turning, letting the bait hover through the strike zone rather than swim aggressively through it.
It shines over offshore structure holding suspended fish — humps, points, ledges, and open-water schools of bass sitting 8-20 feet down over deeper water — especially in clear, calm-to-light-wind conditions and in the cold-front, post-frontal, or high-pressure scenarios where reaction baits get refused. It is also deadly on heavily-boated smallmouth lakes where fish have seen every jerkbait and dropshot in the marina. It fails in stained or muddy water (the subtlety disappears), in and around thick cover (it fouls easily and has no weedguard), and in wind or current strong enough to blow the slow-sinking bait off its intended depth and path.
Gear is finesse spinning tackle: a moderate to medium-light spinning rod with a soft tip to prevent ripping the small trebles free, 10-20 lb braid main line to a fluorocarbon leader (6-10 lb) for near-invisibility and controlled sink rate, and a reel with a smooth, slow retrieve ratio option or the discipline to reel slowly regardless of gearing. Long casts matter — spybait fishes best when the bait has time to settle and travel a long, unbroken path back to the boat, so open water and long sight-lines favor it over tight, short-cast scenarios.
