Ned Rig

A mushroom-head jig with a short, buoyant soft stick — the modern finesse standard that gets bites when nothing else moves a fish.

Also known as: ned rig · mushroom head

A 2.75 in stub of ElaZtech on a mushroom head — the rig that made "do nothing" a technique.

  • Buoyant plastic stands the bait up on the bottom; the fall is the bite
  • Light head (1/16-1/10 oz), light line (PE 0.4-0.6 + 5-6 lb fluoro)
  • Drag, deadstick, or slow swim — never hop it hard
  • Cold water, clear water, pressured fish: the Ned shines

What it is

A mushroom-shaped jighead of 1/16–1/5 oz (1.8–5.6 g) paired with a short, buoyant soft stick of 2.5–3 in (6.4–7.6 cm) — usually a high-float ElaZtech-style plastic. The buoyant tail stands the bait up off the bottom at rest, quivering with the slightest water movement, which is exactly why the Ned catches fish when nothing else does.

Why it earns a place in every boat

The Ned rig is the modern finesse standard across the northern US and Canada. It imitates nothing in particular and everything in general — a goby, a dying minnow, a piece of drifting forage — and pressured or cold-front bass eat it when they refuse every full-sized presentation. Smallmouth on rock, largemouth around sparse cover, deep fish after a front: the Ned gets bites first and asks questions later.

The core technique

Less is more. Drag it, dead-stick it, or hop it gently — the buoyant tail does the work while the bait sits still. Use spinning tackle, 6–10 lb braid to a 6–8 lb fluorocarbon leader, and resist the urge to overwork it. Most bites come as a slow "heavy" feeling, not a thump: reel down and sweep.

When to throw it

Tough bites, cold fronts, ultra-clear water, heavily pressured fish, and any time you need a limit fish more than a kicker. It is not a big-fish tool — but it is the highest-percentage bite in bass fishing.
