Wobble Head
Swim head with a lip or keel that produces an exaggerated side-to-side wobble on a straight retrieve, adding extra vibration to a paddle tail.
Also known as: Wobble Head · wobble head jig · keel head swim jig · wobbling swimbait head
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
The wobble head adds a molded lip, keel, or asymmetric nose to the standard swimbait head shape so the bait rolls and wobbles side to side on the retrieve in addition to the paddle tail's normal kick. This extra body motion increases displacement and vibration, making it easier for bass to locate the bait by feel in low visibility, and it gives the profile a rolling flash pattern rather than a straight, flat swim.
It shines in stained or muddy water and around low light, where the extra vibration and rolling flash out-fish a plain swimbait head that relies more on silhouette. It's also useful over grass tops and along stained flats in spring and early summer when fish are feeding by both sound and sight, and it can be a good follow-up bait after a standard swimbait head has been fished through an area without much response — the added wobble is often enough to trigger fish that shrugged off the first pass.
It fails in ultra-clear, calm water where the exaggerated wobble can look unnatural compared to a more subtle straight swim, and the lip design increases resistance slightly, meaning it doesn't fish quite as deep or fast for a given weight as a standard bullet-shaped swim head. It's not the first choice for heavy cover, since most wobble heads share the swimbait head's exposed hook. Gear mirrors a standard swimbait head setup — medium-heavy rod, 12-17 lb fluorocarbon — with head weight chosen conservatively since the lip adds lift and slows the fall.
