Weedless Swimbait Head
Swimbait head with a wire or plastic weedguard, letting a paddle tail swim through grass and wood without fouling.
Also known as: Weedless Swimbait Head · weed guard swim head · screw lock swimbait head · weedless swim jig head
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
This is a swimbait head fitted with a weedguard — wire bristle, plastic tine, or a screw-lock covering the hook point — so the bait can be swum through and along the edges of vegetation and wood that would otherwise foul an exposed-hook swimbait head. It trades some hookup consistency for the ability to fish cover that holds bass all season, especially grass.
It shines in matted or scattered submerged vegetation, laydowns, and brush where fish are using cover to ambush baitfish, and it's a staple for punching a swimbait through the outer edge of milfoil or coontail rather than fishing open water beside it. Because it can be fished slightly heavier and hop off cover, it doubles as a search bait around isolated grass clumps and stumps that a standard swimbait head can't touch.
It fails when fish want a wide-open, unimpeded hookset — the guard can reduce hookup percentage on short strikes, so many anglers trim the guard down once the pattern is established and cover thins out. It's also not the first choice in truly open water, where a standard swimbait head swims a touch more naturally without the guard's slight drag. Gear should lean heavier than a standard swimbait head setup — 15-20 lb fluorocarbon or braid-to-fluoro leader, medium-heavy to heavy rod — because the fish it's designed for tend to be buried in cover and need to be pulled out immediately after the bite.
