Underspin
Jighead with an in-line spinner blade beneath the hook shank, adding flash and vibration to a paddle tail or fluke.
Also known as: Underspin · Road Runner · spin head · blade jighead · spin jig
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
An underspin is a jighead with a small willow or Colorado blade mounted on a wire arm beneath the head, so the bait swims with both a tail kick and a spinning blade flash — essentially a hybrid between a swimbait head and a small in-line spinner. This extra flash and vibration makes it a go-to when visibility is low from wind, stain, or low light, or when bass are keyed on flash more than silhouette.
It shines around docks, seawalls, and open flats where shad are schooling, and it's a favorite for suspended fish that won't commit to a plain swimbait — the blade gives a subtle attraction cue even on a slow retrieve. Wind actually helps this bait by adding surface chop that hides the terminal tackle and by pushing baitfish shallow. It also fishes well cast past breaking schools of fish to search wide water quickly.
Its weaknesses are cover and finesse presentations: the blade arm hangs up in grass and wood, and the extra hardware makes it a poor choice for slow, subtle work in gin-clear calm conditions where a bare swimbait head might get more bites. Retrieve speed matters — too slow and the blade stops turning; too fast and the bait rides too high. Standard gear is a 7' medium or medium-heavy spinning or casting rod with 10-15 lb fluorocarbon, matched to a soft plastic that won't overpower the blade's action — 3 to 4.5-inch paddle tails or flukes are typical.
