Tube Head (Darter Head)

Slim, often nose-weighted head inserted into a tube bait, giving it a gliding dart-and-fall action on rock and gravel.

Also known as: Tube Head (Darter Head) · tube jighead · insert head · darter head · smallmouth tube head

One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.

  • Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
  • Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
  • Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
  • Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action

The tube head — sometimes called a darter head — is a slim, streamlined jighead sized and shaped to be inserted through the nose of a tube bait so the hook exits through the side of the plastic. Unlike bulkier swimming or football heads, it's built specifically to preserve the tube's natural gliding, side-to-side dart action on the fall and during short hops, which is the tube's signature strength.

It shines on rock, gravel, and sand for smallmouth especially — dragged or hopped along bottom, the tube dances and darts in a way that mimics crayfish and baitfish holding tight to structure. It's also a strong largemouth bait around rock riprap and gravel banks, particularly in clear water where subtlety matters more than bulk. Because tube heads are usually light for their size, they're well suited to a slow, controlled fall that draws strikes on the way down as much as on the retrieve.

It fails in heavy cover — the exposed hook and open-body tube design foul easily in grass and wood — and it's not a fast-water reaction bait; its charm is in the pause and the fall, so burning it removes most of its advantage. Standard gear leans finesse: spinning tackle with 8-10 lb fluorocarbon or light braid-to-fluoro leader for smallmouth work, or slightly heavier casting gear for largemouth around riprap, with a sensitive rod tip to detect the subtle bites that come on the fall.
