Shaky Head
Screw-lock or wire-keeper jighead built for standing finesse worms nose-up, the classic do-nothing bottom bait.
Also known as: Shaky Head · shakey head · finesse jighead worm · do-nothing worm rig · stand-up jighead
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
The shaky head is a lighter, keeper-style jighead (screwlock, wire keeper, or nose hook) built to stand a straight-tail finesse worm up off the bottom with the head buried and tail waving. It's the original modern finesse jighead and remains the best all-around bottom bait when bass want something stationary but with more bulk and profile than a Ned rig — a fatter worm, a bit more casting weight, and a hook gauge that handles bigger fish and stouter tackle.
It shines on any hard or semi-hard bottom — rock, gravel, clay, sparse grass — worked slowly around docks, laydowns, bluff walls, and offshore ledges. It's a go-to when fish are following baits but not committing, or when a Texas rig gets refusals but a slower, subtler bottom bait draws a reaction. It can be fished shallow skipping docks or deep dragging a ledge, making it more versatile in depth than the Ned rig.
It struggles in heavy cover — thick grass or wood fouls the exposed hook point unless a weedguard style is used — and it's generally slower than moving baits, so it's not the choice when bass are actively schooling or chasing. It also lacks the extreme micro-finesse subtlety of a drop shot in ultra-clear pressured water.
Gear: medium-light to medium spinning rod, 8-10 lb fluorocarbon or braid-to-fluoro leader, 1/8-3/8 oz heads matched to depth and wind, 4-1/0 offset or straight-shank light wire hooks.
