Midstrolling Head

Jighead built to swim horizontally at a steady, slow trolling-motor pace for covering water with electronics.

Also known as: Midstrolling Head · midstroll head · strolling jighead · FFS strolling head · trolling motor jighead

One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.

  • Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
  • Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
  • Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
  • Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action

The midstrolling head is shaped and hook-positioned to keep a soft plastic swimming level at a slow, steady pace just off bottom or in open water while the boat itself provides the retrieve speed via the trolling motor — the angler mostly holds the rod still and lets boat movement do the work, occasionally adding small rod sweeps. It emerged alongside forward-facing sonar as anglers began following individual fish or schools across open water rather than blind casting.

It shines for covering large stretches of flats, channel swings, or basin areas efficiently while watching fish react on electronics in real time, letting the angler adjust speed and depth on the fly to trigger following fish. It pairs naturally with a paddle-tail or straight-tail finesse bait that holds a tight, subtle swimming action at slow speeds without rolling over.

It fails in heavy cover or current, where dragging bottom or holding depth against flow is difficult, and it's not a precision tool the way a hover rig is for one stationary fish — it's built for moving, following, and covering rather than parking. It also demands electronics to be used to its full potential; blind midstrolling without sonar is really just a slow swimbait retrieve.

Gear: medium-light to medium spinning outfit, 8-10 lb fluorocarbon, 1/8-3/8 oz heads depending on target depth and boat speed, paired with a 3.5-4.5 inch swimbait or finesse worm.
