Hover Rig (Damiki Rig)

Small horizontal jighead built to hang motionless at a precise depth for vertical presentation to suspended fish.

Also known as: Hover Rig (Damiki Rig) · Damiki rig · hover jighead · damiki head · suspend jig · vertical minnow rig

One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.

  • Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
  • Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
  • Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
  • Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action

The hover rig, commonly called the Damiki rig, uses a small horizontal-eye jighead paired with a soft minnow-profile plastic to hang perfectly level and nearly motionless when held stationary in the water column. Its entire purpose is vertical precision: dropped straight down on forward-facing sonar or a graph, it can be parked directly in front of a suspended bass's face and left almost still, imitating a dying or disoriented baitfish rather than actively fleeing prey.

It shines in winter and late fall when bass suspend tight to baitfish balls over standing timber, brush, or deep basin structure and refuse anything with aggressive action. It has become the standard partner bait for forward-facing sonar because it can be guided directly to a marked fish and held in the strike zone with almost no movement, letting the angler make micro-adjustments in real time.

It fails as a search or covering-water bait — it's a sight-fishing, one-fish-at-a-time tool best suited to boat control and precise vertical presentation, not blind casting. It also underperforms in current or wind chop that make holding a boat and bait still difficult, and it's largely wasted in shallow, non-suspended situations where other heads in this family work better.

Gear: medium-light spinning rod for extreme sensitivity, 6-8 lb fluorocarbon straight to the head, 1/16-1/4 oz depending on depth and current, small light wire hooks paired with a 2.5-3.5 inch soft minnow bait.
