Football Head

Rounded, flattened jighead shaped to roll stably over rock and gravel while dragged, typically paired with a craw or swimbait.

Also known as: Football Head · football jighead · ball head jig · drag head

One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.

  • Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
  • Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
  • Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
  • Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action

The football head gets its name from its rounded, slightly flattened shape, which keeps it upright and rolling smoothly over broken rock, gravel, and boulders instead of wedging into cracks the way a narrower head would. Within this family it's the head of choice for dragging soft plastics — craws, creature baits, or compact swimbaits — across deep or mid-depth rocky structure, standing in for the bulkier flipping football jig when a simpler, lighter presentation is wanted.

It shines on deep main-lake points, humps, and ledges with chunk rock, gravel, or shale, where a slow drag lets the head's stable, wide profile telegraph bottom composition and contact through the rod without constantly hanging up. It's a staple smallmouth bait on highland and natural lakes, and it works for largemouth on deep structure in summer and winter when fish want a slow, bottom-hugging presentation rather than a swimming one.

It fails in grass, brush, or soft silt bottoms, where the flat bottom of the head plows in rather than gliding, and it's a poor choice for fast, reaction-style retrieves — its whole purpose is contact and control at a crawl. Because bites often come as subtle pressure changes rather than sharp thumps, a sensitive rod and no-stretch line matter more here than with swimming heads. Standard gear is 10-15 lb fluorocarbon (or braid to a fluoro leader in deep water) on a medium-heavy, fast-action rod, with head weight chosen by depth and wind drift rather than bait size.
