Darter Head
Flattened, wedge-shaped head built to glide side-to-side like a subsurface jerkbait when twitched.
Also known as: Darter Head · darter jig · minnow head jig · glide head · soft jerkbait head
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
The darter head has a flattened, angled face that catches water asymmetrically, making a soft jerkbait or minnow-style plastic dart and glide side to side on a twitch-pause retrieve — essentially a soft-plastic version of a jerkbait fished on a jighead. It's built for imitating fleeing baitfish rather than crawling bottom, and it's the go-to finesse head when bass are keying on shad or alewives suspended off the bottom.
It shines over deep clear water for suspended smallmouth and largemouth relating to bait, especially in the post-spawn through fall when fish key on baitfish more than crawfish. Twitch-pause cadences let it glide several feet on the pause, covering the water column with an erratic, wounded-baitfish look nothing else in this family replicates.
It fails on bottom-oriented presentations — dragging it defeats the purpose since the head shape is designed for gliding, not standing a bait up — and it's a poor choice in heavy cover since the hook point and flattened face both hang up easily in wood or grass. It also underperforms when bass are locked to bottom structure and unwilling to chase.
Gear: medium spinning rod with a softer tip to protect light wire hooks on the twitch, 8-10 lb fluorocarbon, 1/8-1/4 oz heads matched to a 4-5 inch soft jerkbait, paired often with a paddle or fluke-style tail for extra flash on the glide.
