Ball Head Jig
Round-head jig used mainly to swim grubs, tubes, and small swimbaits at a controlled depth.
Also known as: Ball Head Jig · round head jig · ball jig · roundball head · swim jighead
One hook, one lead head: the simplest way to put any soft plastic exactly where you want it.
- Head shape = job: ball for swimming, football for rock, shaky for standing a worm up
- Weight to depth and wind, not to habit
- Exposed hook catches more, weedguard head loses fewer rigs
- Swim it, hop it, drag it — the head decides the action
The ball head (round head) jig is the simplest, most versatile finesse head — a plain round lead ball threaded onto a light or medium wire hook, most often rigged with a curl-tail grub, tube, or small paddle-tail swimbait. Unlike the Ned or shaky head, its role isn't standing a bait up on bottom; it's swimming a soft plastic at a controlled depth and speed with a subtle horizontal wobble, making it the workhorse for current, open water, and suspended fish.
It shines in river current on smallmouth, swimming through wind-blown flats and points for largemouth, and any time you need a bait that stays level and swims true — especially with tubes and grubs whose action depends on head shape not fighting the tail kick. It's also the standard head for yo-yoing a grub through brush or timber.
It fails as a bottom-dragging finesse bait — the round shape doesn't stand plastics up or crawl over rock as cleanly as a shaky or Ned head, and it snags more easily in wood without a weedguard. It's not the pick for precise vertical presentation either; that's the hover/Damiki head's job.
Gear: spinning or light casting depending on size, 8-12 lb fluorocarbon, heads from 1/16 oz (grubs, tubes in current) up to 3/8 oz (deeper swimming or windy days), matched hook gauge to bait size.
