Jerkbaits & Glide Baits
Hard and soft minnow-shaped baits fished on a rhythmic jerk-and-pause cadence to trigger reaction strikes from suspended, roaming or big predatory bass.
Also known as: Jerkbaits and Glide Baits · jerkbait family · twitchbaits · glide swimbaits · minnow baits
Suspend, twitch, pause: the cold-water and clear-water killer, and the glide bait is its big-fish cousin.
- Suspension is the whole trick — tune buoyancy to water temperature
- Cadence is everything: cold = long pauses, warm = fast twitches
- Grass: standard wire, no ripping; calm-sun-hot-pressure is the hardest day
- Glide baits: slow S-turns, big profile, follows become bites on the pause
What unites this family is the pause. Every bait here is designed to look like a dying or fleeing baitfish that suddenly goes still, and it is almost always the pause — not the jerk — that draws the strike. That covers a huge range: a 4-inch suspending minnow bait twitched over a cold, clear point, a weightless soft plastic slashed across a grass flat, and a foot-long jointed glide bait swimming a wide S-curve past a winter bass. All of them ask the angler to control slack line, read how long a fish wants the bait to sit still, and resist the urge to just wind it in.
Reach for this family when fish are keyed on baitfish but are not actively chasing hard — cold fronts, clear water, post-front bluebird skies, or heavily pressured lakes where a moving bait gets looked at and refused. It is also the family for visually locating and triggering suspended fish over deep structure, and for hunting the single biggest bass in the lake with a glide bait.
The trade-off is time and touch. Jerkbaits demand slow, deliberate retrieves that cover less water per minute than a crankbait or spinnerbait, and the pause length is the whole game — too short and fish won't commit, too long in warm water and they lose interest. They also struggle in heavy cover and thick vegetation, and muddy water mutes their visual trigger. Glide baits trade bite frequency for size: fewer bites, but the bites skew toward true kickers. Soft plastic jerkbaits sit at the finesse end — easy to fish shallow and around grass, but limited in the depths they can effectively cover without added weight.

Variants
- Suspending Jerkbait — A hard minnow tuned to hang motionless on the pause — from 50 mm micro baits for river smallmouth to 130 mm magnums — the cold- and clear-water reaction bait whose whole game is the stop.
- Soft Plastic Jerkbait (Fluke-style) — Weightless soft-plastic minnow bait slashed across the surface and shallow water column — the most versatile, snag-free member of the family.
- Glide Bait — Large, jointed swimbait that carves a wide S-curve on a slow, steady retrieve — a dedicated big-fish tool, especially in winter and pre-spawn.
- Flat-Side Jerkbait — A suspending jerkbait with a flattened body profile and tighter, higher-frequency wobble — built for cold, stained water and pressured fish.
