Heavy Deep-Water Carolina Rig
An upsized C-rig with a 1 ounce-plus weight built to reach and hold bottom on deep offshore structure.
Also known as: Heavy Deep-Water Carolina Rig · Deep Carolina rig · 1 oz C-rig · Offshore Carolina rig · Ledge C-rig
The structure-fishing workhorse: a heavy weight up the line tells you what the bottom is made of.
- Weight, bead, swivel, leader, hook: the bait drifts free behind the sinker
- Drag it — the weight reads bottom like a finger
- Leader length: short in cold and mud, long in grass and clear water
- Long rod, sweep hookset, offset hook
The heavy Carolina rig takes the classic setup and scales the weight up to 1 ounce or more — sometimes 1.5 ounces in current or extreme depth — to maintain bottom contact and feel on structure well past 20 feet. Everything else follows the weight: a stouter swivel, a slightly shorter leader (18-30 inches, since a very long leader becomes hard to control that deep), and often a bulkier creature bait or big worm that holds up under long casts and repeated drags across shell and rock.
It shines on deep summer and fall ledges, river-channel humps, and offshore rock piles in 20+ feet where a standard 1/2-3/4 ounce weight loses contact or takes too long to reach bottom on a long cast. It's a favorite for largemouth stacked on classic reservoir ledges and for smallmouth relating to deep humps and rock in late fall as they push toward winter areas. The extra weight also helps in wind and current, where a lighter rig gets swept out of the strike zone before it reaches bottom.
It fails in anything but open, clean-ish bottom — the heavy weight is unforgiving in rock crevices and wood, hanging up hard and often costing terminal tackle. It's also overkill and unnecessarily loud in shallow or clear water, where it can spook fish rather than draw them. Gear needs to scale up too: a 7'6"-7'11" heavy power, moderate action rod, 20-25 lb fluorocarbon or braid-to-fluoro leader, and a reel with a stout drag, since both the cast and the hookset (a long sweep taking up a lot of stretch and leader) demand more backbone than the standard rig.
