Classic Carolina Rig
The standard structure rig: heavy sliding weight, glass bead, swivel, 2-4 foot leader, and a big soft plastic dragged across deep points and ledges.
Also known as: Classic Carolina Rig · C-rig · Big worm Carolina rig · Structure rig · Ledge rig · Carolina Rig · ball and chain rig · sliding sinker rig · Carolina rigging · slip sinker rig
The structure-fishing workhorse: a heavy weight up the line tells you what the bottom is made of.
- Weight, bead, swivel, leader, hook: the bait drifts free behind the sinker
- Drag it — the weight reads bottom like a finger
- Leader length: short in cold and mud, long in grass and clear water
- Long rod, sweep hookset, offset hook
This is the rig most anglers mean when they say 'Carolina rig' — a 1/2 to 3/4 ounce bullet or egg sinker sliding freely above a glass or plastic bead, tied to a barrel swivel, with a 2 to 4 foot fluorocarbon leader running to a lizard, big worm, or creature bait on an offset worm hook. The bead-on-weight click and the slow drag are the signature: you're covering a main lake point or ledge foot by foot, feeling for rock, shell beds, or a hard-to-soft transition, and letting the bait float up off bottom on the pause.
It shines from spring through fall wherever bass relate to bottom structure in 8-20 feet — main lake points, secondary points, humps, and river ledges. It's especially good after a cold front or in high, bright sun when fish pull tight to structure and won't chase, because the slow drag-and-pause gives them a long look at an easy, weightless-feeling bait.
It fails in cover — wood, matted grass, and boulder fields eat the exposed weight and long leader — and it's a poor choice when fish are suspended or actively chasing, since the presentation is bottom-bound and slow. Long casts are essential (fish spook off the boat on clear, deep structure), so a 7'3"-7'6" medium-heavy, moderate to moderate-fast rod with 12-17 lb fluorocarbon main line and a lighter (10-14 lb) fluoro leader is standard. Braid to a fluoro leader is common in stained water or around shell for extra sensitivity and abrasion resistance. Hooksets are big, sweeping reels-down-and-sweep motions, not snaps, because of all the slack in the system.
