Troubleshooting and switching choices

Instructional advice:

  • Bait won’t penetrate: Increase to 1.5 oz within rating, trim appendages, or switch to a more streamlined bait. Two pegs keep weight-to-hook compact.
  • Missed bites under mats: If you’re using an EWG, try a straight-shank with a snell to angle the point up. Peg tight to shorten the fall distance. Verify a clean, slightly proud hook point after rigging.
  • Line digging on spool after a winch-out: Pack the first 20–30 yards under high tension dockside. During the day, avoid long bombs; this is a short-line system.
  • Rod feels dead or tip locks up: You’re likely over payload once wet. Recalculate and weigh the dry total; if it’s near 2 oz, select a slightly lighter trailer or weight.
  • Bending out hooks: Your rod class is overmatching the terminal. Move to heavier-gauge hooks or step down to a dedicated flipping/pitching casting rod if you must keep lighter wire.
  • When to switch rods:
  • To frogs walked over mats: go to a purpose-built frog rod with a slightly more forgiving tip for casting accuracy and cadence.
  • To 3/4 oz pitching in open grass: a flipping or worm/jig casting rod will improve accuracy and bite translation.
  • To big swimbaits and glides: use a dedicated big-swimbait or glide/jerkbait rod; do not force treble-duty or large glides on a punching blank.
