Troubleshooting and switching choices
- Bites but no pins: Soften inputs, switch to a loop knot, or drop line from 12 to 10 lb fluoro. Check that the drag slips on a hard pull; too tight rips trebles.
- Bait won’t suspend level: Heavier line or added hardware can nose-up/nose-down the bait. Remove snaps, use a loop knot, or swap to lighter trebles. Adjust pauses.
- Rod tip slaps water on jerks: Lower the reel position, shorten the stroke, or move the hand up the reel seat. If you are tall on a low kayak, choose the 6'6" end of the range.
- Casting is “loopy” or overruns: Payload too light; go to the upper half of the rating (3/8–1/2 oz) or increase spool tension a touch. For wind, use 10–12 lb fluoro with a slightly tighter brake.
- Overloaded feel or creaking on casts: Your total payload exceeds rating; immediately step to a more powerful, appropriate rod. For small glides that feel heavy in the air, use a general-purpose casting rod or a worm/jig casting rod depending on weight and hook style.
- Cover dictates power: If you must throw near heavier wood or cables, consider moving the same bait to a more general-purpose medium-heavy casting rod with 12–15 lb line. For true frogs or punching, use dedicated frog or punching rods; this jerkbait rod is not appropriate.
