Field checks and related guides
On-the-water checks before committing a flat:
- Hook gap test: With the frog pressed to the hooks, verify at least ~1/8 in total point exposure when squeezed; if not, very lightly flare hooks.
- Line dig test: After a long bomb and a hard hookset, pull 10 ft of line out and check for braid digging. If present, add one more layer on the spool during fill or step up spool size.
- Tip recovery: Make three forceful overhand casts and watch the tip. If it oscillates more than two cycles, you’re at or above the upper payload; downsize frog.
- Walk-in-place check: In calm water, walk the frog in a 2 ft circle. If it advances more than 6 in per twitch, shorten twitches or lower the rod angle.
Related learning (text guides):
- Primary rod class: casting frog
- Complementary heavy cover work: punching, flipping
- Moving bait alternatives for docks and edges: spinnerbait, bladed jig
- Bottom-contact follow-ups after a missed strike: Texas rig, Carolina rig
- Finesse backup for pressured fish on the same waterbody: finesse bottom on spinning, wacky on spinning
Remember: A frog rod is a specialized tool. Use it where its leverage, hook power, and braid control create clear advantages, and switch promptly when the cover, bait style, or total payload say so.
