Rod/reel/line/bait compatibility

Rod: casting, heavy power, fast action, 7'4"–7'11". Manufacturer-stated ranges typically read 17–25 lb line and 3/8–1 oz lure. Treat those as guardrails; your actual fishable total payload lives inside them.

Reel: low-profile casting reel with a palmable frame. Prioritize rigid sideplates, consistent braking, and a mid-to-high retrieve ratio for fast line pick-up after a short presentation.

  • Starting point: 150-size, 7.1:1 for mixed cover. Go 8.1:1 if you need quicker recovery around docks or current seams.

Line: choose based on cover density and hook/wire.

  • Straight fluorocarbon (17–22 lb) for wood and mixed sparse grass when you want controlled fall and abrasion resistance.
  • Braid main line (40–65 lb) to a short fluorocarbon leader (15–25 lb) when cutting vegetation and instant hook penetration are priorities. The leader guards against shells, dock cables, and abrasive wood.

Baits and terminal:

  • Texas-rig plastics with 3/0–5/0 EWG or straight-shank hooks. Snell-knot a straight shank when using flipping weights to help drive the point upward.
  • Skirted jigs with medium-heavy wire hooks in 3/8–3/4 oz. Pair with compact trailers to control fall and keep payload inside rating.
