Gill-type flat baits: Rigging

  • Free rig: 3/0-5/0 offset worm or EWG hook, 5-10 g sliding sinker. The signature presentation: the sinker hits bottom first and the bait glides down free.
  • Texas rig, pegged: 4/0-5/0 EWG, 7-14 g. Grass edges and laydowns.
  • Jighead, 3-7 g, weedless or exposed: a swimbait head with a keeper. Slow-swim over flats and around bluegill beds.
  • Carolina rig: 3/0-4/0 offset worm hook. Dragging flats in summer.
  • Line-through or weighted swimbait hook: 6/0-8/0 for the 6-8 in magnum bodies.

Gill-type flat baits

A wide, flat, deep-bodied bluegill profile with almost no tail: the body itself rocks and glides on the fall, and it swims with a wide roll on a jighead.
