Braided lines overview: Colour
Colour changes what you see first, and what the fish sees second. To see the line, go bright; to keep the main line away from the fish, add a leader rather than change colour.
| Colour | Main job | Suits | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow / orange / neon / pink | Watching slack-line bites | Soft-plastic finesse for smallmouth (an angler report: pink braid + FC leader in clear water), walleye jigs | Fish may see the main line → add a leader |
| Dark / moss green | Blends with dark green backgrounds | Largemouth tied direct in weeds: frogs, punching, flipping; pike in weeds (with a bite leader) | Harder for you to see; still a silhouette against a bright sky |
| White / pale | Tracking the line bow against dark backgrounds | Dark water, shaded banks | Hard to see in glare; not clear |
| Multicolour / marked | Measuring casts and payout | Vertical walleye, deep drop shot, depth control | With current and bow, payout ≠ depth |
| Dark grey / black (common on sinking PE) | Low contrast under water | Vertical sinking-PE work | You give up watching the line |
By species: main-line colour tied direct (clear water)
| Species | Yellow | Red | Lime / blue / pink | Dark green | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Largemouth | Use direct ties cautiously | Use direct ties cautiously | Prefer a leader | Not invisibility | Yellow: some fish hesitated in an actual-line test; red: an indirect report, not a red-line test |
| Smallmouth | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader (an angler report on pink main line for bite watching) | Not invisibility | Practical precaution |
| Walleye | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader | Not invisibility | Practical precaution |
| Pike, muskie | Keep bite protection | Keep bite protection | Keep bite protection | Keep bite protection | Bite protection first, never traded for transparency |
| Crappie, perch, trout | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader | Prefer a leader | Not invisibility | Practical precaution |
| Any species, with a leader | Keep the main line for watching | Keep the main line for watching | Keep the main line for watching | Check you can see it | A leader does not make the main line invisible |
Actions, not fish preferences. Apart from the largemouth yellow-line test, no rejection test exists for these species and colours; the table is the cautious setup of high-vis main line for watching and lower visibility at the lure end.
By water colour
| Water | Watch first |
|---|---|
| Clear | Visibility at the lure end; blue line can merge with sky reflections |
| Algae green, weedy background | Lime can blend in: compare pink or blue; weeds do not mean stained water |
| Tea-stained | Check the real viewing distance; red has no fixed "invisible depth" |
| Muddy | Make sure you can see bites and control the lure; muddy water does not hide line up close |
Fading: two ways to colour braid
| Surface dye / tinted coating | Solution-dyed | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the colour is | On the outside | Built into the fibre before spinning |
| Does it fade? | Rubs and sun-bleaches off | Lasts much longer, not forever |
| Example | Most general braid | KastKing ColorShield (labelled solution-dyed UHMWPE) |
| What fading costs you | Harder to see; markers misread; handling changes as the coating goes | Same, but far slower |
Faded ≠ weaker; fuzzed = weaker. Faded line can be perfectly sound, and bright line can already be cut.
Water: PE fibre does not absorb water, but the weave holds it
| PE braid | Nylon | Dacron braid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre uptake | Very low | Yes (the polymer absorbs; a different mechanism) | Low |
| Water held in the weave | Some; more with loose weave or worn coating | None (mono) | A lot |
| What you notice | Spray off the line, ice in the guides in hard frost, looks thicker | Wet properties change | Swells on the spool, mildews if stored wet |
| Fix | Tight weave, hydrophobic coating | Product-specific | Dry the spool before storage |
- To compare carried water: soak and drain the same way, weigh, measure diameter in several directions, then cast.
- A Japanese label does not guarantee every model stays dry and thin after long wear; US products also use hydrophobic finishes.
Evidence (how fish and people see line)
| Study | Finding | Does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Largemouth line discrimination, 1979 (18 fish, five 8 lb nylon lines) | Most discriminated; fluorescent yellow easiest, two fish hesitated at yellow | Bass cannot see or dislike yellow |
| Largemouth colour vision, 2018/2019 | Cone peaks 535 / 614 nm; dichromatic | A liked or disliked line colour |
| Smallmouth, pink main line (angler report) | Pink braid + FC leader in clear water to see line movement | Smallmouth prefer pink |
| Human underwater twine visibility, 1973 | Yellow seen furthest in low turbidity, falling steeply as turbidity rises | Yellow is always most visible above water |
| Human fluorescent-target detection, 1997 (18 people) | Fluorescent yellow-green helps daytime peripheral detection; size matters | A fixed sighting distance for line |
