Why do smallmouth slash at my moving bait and miss?

Because smallmouth are pursuit predators that often attack a moving target from the side at an angle — a slashing interception rather than the largemouth's point-blank ambush engulf. On a fast-moving bait, that slash clips the tail hook or misses entirely. The classic fixes all exploit the same mechanism: kill the retrieve the instant you feel a slap (the follow-up strike on the falling bait is usually committed), add a soft-plastic trailer to extend the target, or switch to a bait with a rear treble in the strike path.
