Is live bait effective for smallmouth bass?

Extremely — arguably too effective. Leeches, nightcrawlers and minnows fished on a slip-sinker rig, behind a split shot or under a slip float are traditional smallmouth tactics on northern natural lakes and rivers, and soft-shelled crayfish are legendary where they are legal. Live bait shines when fish are neutral: post-front days, cold water, heavy pressure. The problem is that smallmouth swallow it, and a deep-hooked fish is far more likely to die after release. If you fish bait, use circle hooks or small octopus hooks, set quickly, and cut the line on a swallowed hook. Dead bait is not a smallmouth method, though a motionless tube or drop-shot bait is picked up readily. Many jurisdictions restrict crayfish and baitfish use or transport, and tournaments are artificial-only — check first.
