Is bed fishing for smallmouth worse than for largemouth?

The honest reading of the research: the act is the same, but the stakes are often higher for smallmouth. Their beds sit exposed on open gravel rather than tucked into cover, nest-predator pressure is frequently worse (round gobies in particular are a smallmouth-range problem and raid within seconds), males guard longer through a fry stage that keeps them catchable for weeks, and northern smallmouth get fewer spawning seasons in a lifetime to compensate for a failed nest. None of that makes a quick, legal catch-and-release a catastrophe — but it is why several core smallmouth jurisdictions close the spring season entirely, and why "fast, wet, and immediate" release rules matter more for this species than most.
