How big a prey can a pike really swallow?

The honest ceiling is about half the pike's own length, and fish are found choked to death proving it. Routine meals run smaller — most stomach-content studies put the bread and butter at 10–30 % of body length — because handling a huge, struggling prey item costs time and risk. But the capability is real: a 90 cm (35 in) pike can and occasionally does take a 45 cm (18 in) fish, which is why 30–40 cm (12–16 in) baits are legitimate trophy tools, not marketing. The practical rule: you can fish a bait too small to interest a giant far more easily than one too big for it to eat.
