Marigane: Turnover
Autumn cooling and wind can erode stratification and mix a lake. Timing and extent depend on depth, exposure and previous thermal conditions. Not every waterbody stratifies strongly, and different basins need not mix together.
Turnover hits crappie harder than bass, for a simple reason: the bass article's victims lose a thermocline, but crappie lose their address. A summer crappie school's entire organization — the band just above the thermocline — is built on the layering that turnover erases. When the lake rolls, the band, the oxygen floor, and the plankton layer all dissolve at once, and basin schools scatter through the whole water column. For one to three weeks, the open-water game is genuinely poor: marks are thin, shallow, deep, everywhere and nowhere.
The playbook is the article's, with crappie edits. First, fish around the event: rivers and lakes that don't stratify never turn; shallow bowls turn early and recover fast; deep clear lakes turn late — in crappie country you can often follow good fishing from lake to lake for a month. Second, on a turned lake, leave the basin alone and fish the fish that never depended on layers: dock, brush-pile, and standing-timber crappie in 2–5 m (6.5–16 ft) keep biting through the mess. Third, watch for the recovery — turnover's end is what regroups schools on deep structure and starts the tight late-fall bonanza, so the first clean-water, stable-temperature week afterward is a bell worth answering.
Takeaway: when the basin marks vanish and the water smells like a compost heap, spend two weeks on wood and docks or on a lake that turns later — then race back for the regroup.

Turnover
FAQ
Why does crappie fishing fall apart during fall turnover?
Turnover demolishes the structure the fish were organized around. When the surface cools to match the deep water — near 10–13 °C (50–55 °F) — the whole column mixes: the thermocline vanishes, oxygen and temperature become uniform top to bottom, and suddenly bait and crappie can be anywhere. Schools that were compressed into a tidy band scatter, and the water itself turns murky with stirred sediment. The slump usually lasts one to two weeks; skip lakes that smell sulfurous and look tea-stained, or find water that has already restabilized — shallow lakes finish turning over first.
