Marigane: Summer

A Canadian summer does not imply extreme heat, stable fish positions or a mandatory offshore move. Shallow and deep patterns can coexist, and the main lake, bay and river channel may differ on the same day.

Here the crappie playbook breaks hardest from the bass one. Forget the weedlines and shallow cover story: a summer crappie's home is open water — schools suspended over 8–15 m (26–49 ft) basins, hanging in a narrow band just above the thermocline, following zooplankton and young-of-year minnows. The bass article's "stable summer homes" idea still applies, but the home is a depth, not a place: the school may roam the whole basin, yet it holds its band — say 5 m (16 ft) down — with swim-bladder discipline, day after day.

There is a second, structure-flavored mode: brush piles, cribs, standing timber, bridge pilings, and dock shade hold fish through midday, and in reservoirs the planted brush pile is the classic summer spot. Many schools run both — pinned to wood at noon, sliding off to feed mid-column at dusk. Low light rules the clock: dawn, dusk, and night under lights are the feeding windows; bright midday pushes fish tighter to cover or deeper down the band.

Presentation is one sentence: find the band on sonar and keep a small jig or minnow at it or just above it, never below. Count down your cast, or spider-rig/slow-troll the depth precisely.

Takeaway: stop fishing the bank — sonar the basin, mark the band, fish 0.5 m (2 ft) above the school, and save the brush piles for midday.

Summer

What is happening

A Canadian summer does not imply extreme heat, stable fish positions or a mandatory offshore move. Shallow and deep patterns can coexist, and the main lake, bay and river channel may differ on the same day.

Where the fish are

Check shallow rock, weed openings, wood and useful shade as well as deeper weed edges, breaks and offshore forage. Smallmouth can use shallow rocks or rocks hidden in weeds; largemouth can move among connected feeding areas. Temperature, oxygen, clarity, light and prey choose the useful habitat.

How to fish it

Cloud, fog and manageable chop can extend shallow opportunities. In bright, calm, clear conditions compare tight cover and adjacent depth before abandoning the shallows. Mark exact productive rocks, weed gaps and casting angles for either species; select rigs for observed depth and cover.

FAQ

Why are summer crappie out over the open basin instead of on the bank?

Because their food is. In summer the plankton biomass — and the young-of-year shad and minnows eating it — concentrates in open water near the thermocline, and a fish built to hover economically simply moves in with the groceries. Typical summer life is a school suspended 4–8 m (13–26 ft) down over 10–15 m (33–50 ft) of water, or stacked on deep brush piles and cribs at that same depth. Shore-bound thinking catches stragglers; depth-disciplined open-water fishing catches the school.
