Heavy fast casting rod, 7.5:1-8.1:1 reel to pick up slack on a short line, 17-20 lb fluoro around rock and wood, 40-50 lb braid around grass and reeds. Heavy-wire offset 3/0 for a 3-3.5 in bait, 4/0 for 3.5-4.5 in; snell it when you are setting on braid at close range. Always pegged. The common mistake is over-working the bait — pitch, let it fall on a semi-slack line, two hops, reel in, next target.
