Braided lines overview: Carrier count
Carrier count = yarn bundles on the braiding machine, not fibres. Same yarn and size: fewer carriers → thicker bundles → rougher surface.
| x4 | x8 | x12 | Cored (e.g. x13) | Fused | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bundle size | Thick | Fine | Finer | Depends on build | No carriers |
| Surface | Coarse, textured | Round, smooth | Rounder | Depends on build | Stiff, flat |
| Guide noise | Noticeable | Quiet | Quiet | Depends on build | Quiet |
| Light lures (3–7 g) | Poor | Good | Good | Depends on build | Good (light ratings) |
| Durability in weeds | The usual durable choice | Depends on yarn and coating | Depends on yarn and coating | Depends on build | Poor |
| Price | Low | Mid | High | High | Mid |
| Common sizes | PE 3–8 (40–100 lb) | PE 0.6–2.0 | PE 0.6–2.0 | — | 4–30 lb |
| Typical use | Baitcaster, tied direct: frogs, punching, flipping | Spinning main line with FC leader: finesse, distance | As x8 | Read the construction | Ice, light spinning |
Beyond the count, four things set how a braid feels:
| Factor | What it changes | On the box? |
|---|---|---|
| Yarn | Strength, wear | Rarely |
| Pick count (Sufix 832 = 8 carriers, 32 picks per inch) | Roundness, noise, water held in the weave | Sometimes in the name |
| Coating | Handling, colour, carried water; wears off | Rarely |
| Core (Sufix 131 = 12 HMPE carriers + 1 GORE core) | Roundness, solid feel | Read the construction |
- "Fewer carriers wear better, more cast smoother" screens similar products only; it is not a cross-brand law. Protect the contact section instead of relying on the count.
- Whether x12 is worth the premium has no public side-by-side data: buy a good x8 and spend the difference on leader.
- More carriers do not guarantee more strength or better shell-cut resistance.
- Near-zero stretch is a system choice: a softer tip, a set (not locked) drag and a leader with a few percent of stretch do the cushioning; heavy-wire hooks for flipping and frogs, because braid can pull a fine-wire hook out.
